A tragic incident has rocked the Lions during their European tour after a player from the Johannesburg-based side died in France on Friday, just a day before their Investec Champions Cup clash against La Rochelle.

According to French media reports, the player, whose identity has not yet been made public, was found unresponsive at the team’s hotel in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, where the Lions were preparing for Saturday’s encounter.

Emergency services were called to the hotel shortly after 10:20 am local time. Despite attempts to resuscitate the player, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

The Lions had travelled to France for their Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle, but the tragic news has cast a shadow over the team’s preparations.

The hotel reportedly arranged psychological support for members of the touring squad and hotel staff following the incident.

At the time of writing, the player’s identity had not been officially confirmed, and no announcement had been made regarding whether Saturday’s fixture would proceed as scheduled.

The tragedy is a devastating blow to the Lions and the wider South African rugby community, with thoughts turning to the player’s family, teammates and friends during this difficult time.
