Mbesuma Warns Players Of “Career-Defining” Pressure In The Derby

Former striker Collins Mbesuma says playing in the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates can either make or destroy a player, warning that a single mistake can linger in the memories of fans for years.
The two Soweto giants will clash at the FNB Stadium on Saturday in what will be the 184th Derby meeting between the sides.
There is little margin for error, with both teams firmly in the title race. Pirates sit second on the table, level on 38 points with log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after 17 matches. A win for the Buccaneers could see them move to the top of the table for at least 24 hours before Sundowns face Sekhukhune United in Pretoria the following day.
Mbesuma, who has uniquely represented both Chiefs and Pirates during his illustrious PSL career, has predicted a Chiefs victory in this weekend’s showdown.
Despite holding the record for the most goals scored in a single PSL-era season — netting 35 goals in all competitions during the 2004/05 campaign — Mbesuma never scored for Chiefs against Pirates, even in that remarkable season when he swept the individual awards.
However, he did find the net for Pirates against Chiefs in a 1-1 draw on 8 December 2012 at FNB Stadium. Interestingly, Lehlohonolo Majoro, another player who turned out for both clubs, scored the equaliser that day to secure the draw.
“Because the Derby is a different ball game,” Mbesuma said on SuperSport TV Unplugged, where he appeared alongside Mandla Masango, Benedict Vilakazi, and Innocent Maela.
“Sometimes you can say it is a once-off match — whatever you do today, it can destroy you or it can make you.
“So it is a once-off; you have to deliver on that particular day.”
Meanwhile, supporters have been urged to arrive early for the match, with stadium gates opening at 12:00. Organisers have promised that the stadium precinct will come alive with activations, entertainment and competitions ahead of kick-off.
These experiences will conclude at 14:00, with many giveaways reserved for fans who arrive well in advance. Arriving early will not only ensure smooth entry into the venue but also give supporters the chance to enjoy exclusive Derby Day rewards.
