Miguel On Facing Sundowns, Captain’s Armband

Kaizer Chiefs defender Miguel Inacio has spoken out on facing Mamelodi Sundowns in their Betway Premiership encounter at FNB Stadium on Saturday (15:00) and addressed the suggestions that he must take over the captain’s armband.

The 28-year-old center-back, who penned a three-year contract with Chiefs from Angolan giants Petro de Luanda in the off-season, has earned a starting berth in the opening two league matches alongside Rushwin Dortley.

Following a man-of-the-match display in a 3-1 win over AmaZulu, where he scored his first Chiefs goal, Miguel has poured cold water on suggestions that he must captain the Soweto giants, stating that he doesn’t need the armband to be a leader and everyone in the team must be a captain. “It gives me confidence having played the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League, but most importantly is that I am not trying to be a commander or a soldier,” he said.

“I’m trying to be one of them, to adapt as fast as possible and make them commanders themselves.

“Because if we have 11 commanders it will be much easier than having one, and my mission at Kaizer Chiefs is to make all of them commanders. I don’t need an armband, my mission here is to be a leader.

“I have to prove that I’m a leader with the results, effort, training, every day being an example for the young boys. That’s my mission as a leader, the armband is good with Yusuf [Maart], I respect him as a captain, and I see him as a leader in the locker room.”

He continued: “I don’t need the armband, I just need everyone to stick together, and everyone will be the captain of this team. We have to understand that we need 11 captains, not one because if we have 11 captains it will be much easier on everyone.”

This will be the 109th meeting between the two sides, with Chiefs having won 41 while Sundowns have accumulated 35 and 32 have ended in a draw. Chiefs have outscored their today’s opponents with 124 goals while Sundowns have scored 117.

When it comes to the top scorers, Ace Khuse, Chippa Molatedi, Thabo Mooki, and Siyabonga Nomvethe have scored five goals apiece while playing for Chiefs.
