Post-Broos Era Takes Shape As Bafana Learn 2027 AFCON Qualification Path

Bafana Bafana have been drawn into Group D for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers following a star-studded draw ceremony conducted in Cairo on Tuesday.
East African neighbors Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will co-host the 2027 showpiece, which runs from 19 June to 17 July 2027. Kenya is coached by Bafana Bafana all-time goalscorer Benni McCarthy, who will return to South Africa for the first time as an opponent.
This historic tournament marks the first time three nations will jointly host Africa’s premier competition, bringing the continental finals back to East Africa after a 51-year absence.
The qualifiers feature 48 nations split across 12 groups, with the top two teams from each pool traditionally advancing to the finals.
The Group D Qualification Twist
Although Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are actively participating in the qualification rounds, they have already secured automatic berths as tournament hosts.
Consequently, this alters the qualification dynamics for their respective groups. Because Kenya resides in Bafana Bafana’s group, three teams will officially progress from Group D (South Africa, Guinea, Kenya, and Eritrea) to the tournament, significantly boosting South Africa’s chances of progression.
By the time these qualifiers kick off, a new head coach will lead Bafana Bafana. Legendary tactician Hugo Broos has already confirmed his retirement at the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
