September Eyes Top 8 Despite SuperSport Loss

Chippa United coach Thabo September remains focused on securing a top-eight finish in the Betway Premiership, stating that their fate lies in either winning their remaining matches or hoping for losses from teams trailing them.

This comes after their 2-0 defeat to SuperSport United on Saturday.

Despite the setback against SuperSport, the Chilli Boys currently occupy eighth position in the league standings with 30 points after 25 games. They hold a four-point advantage over SuperSport United, who sit in 13th place with 26 points.

When questioned about their strategy to maintain their top-eight spot, September offered a straightforward assessment: “Either you win your games or all the teams behind you lose. That’s how you hold on to it,” September said.

“So right now we need to focus on Sundowns and try to get something out of the two games we’re playing against Sundowns. We have Marumo Gallants in Bloemfontein and try to get something out of that game.”

“But we can do the planning, work hard, and if it’s not for us, it’s not for us; we’ll do our best to get into the Top 8. The opportunity is there, the points are saying we can get into the Top 8, until the points say we can’t get into the Top 8, that’s when we stop,” he added.

September believes that Sundowns is a tough team to play against but declared that they aim to get results from their upcoming meetings, firstly at Loftus Versfield Stadium on Wednesday and at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on May 14.

“Yeah, always tough for any team that is in the league against Sundowns,” said September.

“Also, we’re not doing ourselves any justice when we lose your regular player coming towards the dying minutes of the game, and you’re going to play Sundowns, so we will just prepare for them.”

“Listen, we have players, so we’re going to prepare for them and try to get results out of Sundowns.”

However, history is against Chippa United as they have never managed to defeat Mamelodi Sundowns in a league match.
