Springboks Score Nine-Try Blitz To Crush Georgia

The Springboks delivered another scintillating display, scoring nine tries en route to a dominant 55-10 victory over Georgia at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

Georgia’s 10 points all came in the first half, where they started strongly, even being the first to gain a foothold in the game. However, once the Springboks found their rhythm, it was only a matter of time before the tries started flowing.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, making his first appearance of the season, gave the home crowd an early scare in the second minute when he took a bump to the head from Ilia Spanderrashville. Kolisi was immediately replaced by Kwagga Smith in the loose trio for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA).

While the Boks were briefly reeling, Georgia made a perfect start. Their hooker, Vano Karkadze, scored a try from a powerful maul that the Boks initially couldn’t stop. This opportunity arose after scrum-half Grant Williams’ clearance kick went long instead of staying short in his own half. Georgia capitalized on the mistake, taking the ball directly from where the clearance occurred.

Once the Springboks gained possession, they challenged Georgia to match their physicality. Georgia couldn’t, and Boan Venter, making his Springbok debut in his home province of Mpumalanga, dived over for five points. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed the conversion, with the ball striking the post.

The Springboks’ intensity quickly overwhelmed Georgia, leading to their second try when hooker Marnus van Merwe crashed over from a rolling maul. Again, Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed the conversion. Before this try, Kolisi had passed his HIA test and returned to the game, much to the excitement of the crowd.

The third try arrived in the 19th minute as Canan Moodie showcased an exceptional display, beating three defenders with a powerful carry to score. This was a true team effort, involving almost the entire Springbok squad. Feinberg-Mngomezulu, however, missed his third conversion of the match.

Another rolling maul in the 32nd minute allowed van Merwe to score his second try of the night, taking the score to 22-10 in favor of the Springboks. Despite missing two potential tries in the dying minutes of the first half from a maul and a scrum, the Boks went into halftime with a comfortable lead.

In the early stages of the second half, coach Rassie Erasmus made tactical changes, replacing the entire front row with Thomas du Toit, Bongi Mbonambi, and Vincent Koch. RG Snyman also came on for Eben Etzebeth at lock.

Aphelele Fassi received the ball and delivered a superb kick to the 22-meter line, catching Georgia’s defense in disarray. The Springboks capitalized on the pressure, winning a scrum near the posts. They made it count as Grant Williams set up his soon-to-be teammate Edwill van der Merwe out wide, and the Lions winger scored in the 47th minute, marking the Boks’ fifth try of the night.

The pressure on Georgia continued to mount, as they struggled with two clear kicks in their own half, providing the Boks with more scoring opportunities. The back-to-back Rugby World Cup champions secured their sixth try in the 56th minute when Damian Willemse, who replaced Aphelele Fassi at fullback, beat two defenders from an offload by Handré Pollard (who had come on for Feinberg-Mngomezulu) and crossed the whitewash. Pollard successfully converted his first attempt, a stark contrast to Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s earlier misses.

Despite the relentless Springbok attack, Georgia remained in the contest, fighting hard even without adding to their score. While the Springboks gave away a few set pieces, they consistently turned over possession to win scrums. Faf de Klerk, who replaced Williams at scrum-half, flicked the ball over during a breakdown, allowing van Merwe to complete his hat-trick and score the Boks’ seventh try of the night.

The Springboks’ relentless pressure continued as Snyman’s offload released Williams, who then found Kurt-Lee Arendse waiting to get his name on the scoresheet. Pollard successfully added the extras, his third conversion of the night.

Pollard then sealed the deal for the Springboks to surpass the 50-point mark, showing class to keep the ball alive and score the ninth try of the night despite the siren, ensuring they remain undefeated at Mbombela Stadium. This victory marks their fourth win in as many games this season for the world champions.

The Springboks will now turn their attention to the Rugby Championship, where they aim to defend the title they won last year.
