Stellenbosch Holds Destiny in DStv Diski Challenge

Stellenbosch FC controls their own fate in the DStv Diski Challenge title race after weekend results saw them defeat Orlando Pirates while Mamelodi Sundowns fell to Sekhukhune United.

Prior to these results, Stellenbosch, nicknamed “Stellies,” did themselves a huge favor by beating fellow title contenders Sundowns, who were the league leaders at the time. Now, Stellies sit atop the table with 57 points, just one ahead of second-placed Sundowns. They know that securing 12 points from their remaining matches will secure the 2023/24 title.

Can Anyone Stop the Stellenbosch Juggernaut?

Coach Evangelos Vellios’ young squad has shown remarkable resilience in the title chase. With a favorable fixture list ahead, they’ll be expected to win the league.

Here’s a look at their remaining hurdles and the possibility of a slip-up:

  • Sunday, April 21st vs. Cape Town City (home): Stellies’ next challenge comes at Idas Valley against a resurgent Cape Town City side, who have won four out of their last five Diski Challenge matches. City’s recent form suggests they can cause an upset, especially considering they’ve won all three of their most recent meetings against Stellenbosch. However, Stellenbosch can’t afford any missteps if they want to join Golden Arrows as the only team to win the DStv Diski Challenge twice.
  • April 28th vs. Kaizer Chiefs (home): While Kaizer Chiefs are out of the title race, they can still influence the final outcome. They have upcoming matches against both Stellenbosch and Sundowns. Despite losing their last two games before facing Sundowns, Stellies can expect some resistance from Chiefs, who will be looking to end the season on a high note. Nonetheless, Stellenbosch holds the historical upper hand, having defeated Chiefs four times in their last six meetings.
  • May 4th vs. Moroka Swallows (away): This trip to Dobsonville Stadium for the clash against Moroka Swallows could be the fixture where Stellenbosch clinches the title, depending on Sundowns’ results. The Dube Birds have been prone to dropping points this season. On paper, this appears to be Stellenbosch’s easiest remaining match. However, teams with nothing to lose have proven dangerous this season, as evidenced by Cape Town Spurs and Sekhukhune United defeating Chiefs and Sundowns, respectively.
  • May 11th vs. Golden Arrows (home): In a worst-case scenario, Stellenbosch will aim to secure the title and achieve historical success against Golden Arrows on the final day. Ideally, they’ll have already wrapped things up before this potentially nerve-wracking finale. They’ll be heavy favorites against a mid-table Arrows side that has struggled this season. Golden Arrows, the only team to have previously won the DStv Diski Challenge twice (2015/16 & 2017/18), will be hosting Swallows on the same day.
