Sundowns Staff Rumored To Join Mokwena At Wydad

Rulani Mokwena, newly unveiled as Wydad Casablanca’s head coach, is reportedly eyeing several former colleagues from Mamelodi Sundowns to join him in Morocco.

Mokwena signed a three-year contract with Wydad on Thursday, following a controversial departure from Sundowns. Just eight days prior, he was released by the South African club after a reported disagreement with sporting director Flemming Berg. This came despite a recent four-year contract extension and leading Sundowns to their seventh consecutive league title.

Top of Mokwena’s wishlist is believed to be Michael Loftman, his former assistant coach at Sundowns. Loftman is currently with Sundowns on their European pre-season tour, but his future remains uncertain. With Sundowns undergoing a technical staff overhaul and lacking a permanent head coach, Loftman’s move to Wydad seems plausible.

Dayle Solomon and Mario Masha, former performance analysts at Sundowns who were let go by the club, are also rumored to be targets for Wydad.

Sinethemba Badela, who recently resigned from his role as Sundowns DStv Diski Challenge coach, and Sibusiso Mahlangu, a former fitness trainer at the club, could also follow Mokwena to Wydad. Their expertise would be valuable additions to his new technical team.

These potential transfers highlight the ever-changing nature of football. If Mokwena successfully recruits his former colleagues, it could significantly boost Wydad’s technical capabilities.

For Sundowns, the potential exodus of staff members adds another layer of complexity to their ongoing restructuring efforts.

The practice of coaches bringing trusted personnel with them is common in football, as recently seen with Kaizer Chiefs’ new head coach, Nasreddine Nabi, who arrived with a four-person technical team.
