Tenyane: Don’t Compare Bay With AmaZulu

Phakwe Group CEO Thabiso Tenyane assures a different approach for Richards Bay compared to AmaZulu’s recent struggles.

Tenyane has committed a significant investment to Richards Bay, with a three-year sponsorship worth R100 million. This includes an annual payment of R20 million and an additional R40 million dedicated to building a new training facility.

Following the sponsorship announcement on Wednesday, Tenyane set ambitious goals for the upcoming season. He aims to see Richards Bay finish within the top four and hinted at a new coach joining the team by the end of July.

Tenyane acknowledges past disappointments in KwaZulu-Natal football. He specifically references Sandile Zungu’s unfulfilled promises with AmaZulu, where initial aspirations of challenging for the league title quickly faded.

AmaZulu only achieved a top-four finish once, under Benni McCarthy in the 2020/21 season where they were runners-up. Subsequent player acquisitions haven’t yielded consistent results, leading to player releases at the end of seasons due to unmet expectations.

Richards Bay, according to Tenyane, will be a different story. “Don’t compare us with AmaZulu,” he insists. “Measure me of what I have said, measure of what I have said.”

Tenyane emphasizes a business-oriented approach with a focus on leadership and investment.

“For me soccer is a business. What I’m bringing is leadership and commitment in terms of resources to Richards Bay.

“I’m coming to capacitate the chairman (Sifiso Biyela) by giving him all the tools that necessarily require for him to be a winner.”

Bay has already shown clear intentions by signings Tlakusani Mthethwa, Siyethemba Sithebe, Thabiso Kutumela, Keegan Allan, Sbani Mntungwa, and Fezile Gcaba ahead of next season. The club also anticipates signing three more players in the coming days.
