“We Fight For Each Other”: How Pietersen’s Try-Locking Sharks Made History At Thomond Park

Hollywoodbets Sharks coach JP Pietersen said the victory over Munster was particularly special, not only because of its historic significance but also because of what it represented for the team.
The Sharks produced a memorable performance at Thomond Park on Saturday, claiming a historic 15-3 victory to secure their first-ever win at the iconic Limerick venue in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship.
Built on defensive resilience, physicality and an outstanding collective effort, the performance reflected the growing belief and unity within the squad.
Two tries proved decisive on the night, with Gianni Lombard crossing the line twice to finish with 10 points, while Ivan Van Zyl also got his name on the scoresheet. The visitors, meanwhile, kept Munster tryless throughout the encounter.
Despite having to overcome a yellow card to Ox Nche, the Sharks remained composed and disciplined, refusing to allow the hosts back into the contest. Their defensive commitment ensured Munster were restricted to a solitary penalty as the visitors secured an impressive 15-3 victory.
“It’s a special one for us tonight. Winning here for the first time, you can see the physical effort from the boys,” Pietersen said.
He was particularly pleased with the team’s defensive effort and the relentless attitude displayed throughout the match.
“We showed that we were relentless today, and it means so much more with our defensive effort. We didn’t give them a single try. That shows what the boys have been building in the environment. We care for each other, and it’s beautiful to see that in our actions, not just in what we say,” he said.
“We fight for each other, and that is great to see.”
Pietersen also highlighted the importance of the relationships being developed within the squad, with experienced campaigners and younger players building strong connections both on and off the field.
“It’s just a good mix of guys, old and young, enjoying each other’s company and making time for each other. Really making time to connect.”
One of the standout individual performers was 19-year-old Zekhethelo Siyaya, whose impressive display earned him Man of the Match honours. Pietersen was quick to acknowledge the youngster’s contribution while also crediting the forward pack for laying the foundation for his performance.
“Zekhethelo put in a Man of the Match performance, but the forward pack also gives him that platform to perform. He is a special and humble kid, an unbelievable talent, and at 19 he is still learning.”
The victory was also a welcome reward after a demanding three-week tour away from home, with Pietersen acknowledging the challenges of being separated from family while on the road.
“It’s been a difficult tour; it’s not easy to be away from family for three weeks, but I am happy we could get a win.”
With the historic Thomond Park triumph secured, attention now turns to the players departing to join the Springboks for their November tour. Pietersen offered his best wishes to those selected, expressing confidence in their ability to make an impact.
“I want to wish all the best to the players going on the Bok tour. I know they will be successful with the November tour.”
For the Sharks, this was more than just another victory on tour. It was a statement of collective commitment, defensive determination and a squad growing together.
Winning at Thomond Park for the first time, and doing so without conceding a try, made the 15-3 triumph an occasion to remember.
