Pirates Edge Chiefs In A Thriller As Miguel Sees Red

Orlando Pirates moved to the top of the Betway Premiership table after defeating fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the 186th Soweto Derby at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory elevates the Buccaneers to 25 points from nine matches, moving them two points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns ahead of Sundowns’ evening clash against Durban City.

In a classic tale of two halves, Chiefs failed to capitalize on their early dominance, a squandered first-half performance that ultimately cost them dearly after the break. Pirates asserted control in the second half, clinical when it mattered to seal victory in the 80th derby hosted at the iconic Calabash.

Prior to kickoff, global football icon Thierry Henry presented the match ball on the pitch in his role as Betway ambassador. The former Arsenal star was also spotted in deep conversation with Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, following their past connection in the English Premier League.

Chiefs asked the opening questions of a reshuffled Pirates defense that featured Nkosinathi Ndaba at right-back. Wandile Dube, who assisted Pule Mmodi during April’s 1-1 derby draw, forced the first major save in the 13th minute, holding off Deon Hotto before unleashing a powerful strike that drew a diving save from Sipho Chaine.

Pirates responded in the 24th minute. Yanela Mbuthuma broke free down the flank, and his low effort deflected off defender Thabo Moloisane, wrong-footing Brandon Petersen to open the scoring. Despite strong appeals for offside from the Chiefs bench, referee Luxolo Badi allowed the goal to stand—marking Pirates’ 205th goal in derby history.

Chiefs found their equalizer six minutes later following an uncharacteristic error from Sipho Chaine. Mfundo Vilakazi’s initial strike was mishandled by the Pirates goalkeeper, allowing Mmodi to react quickest and slot home the loose ball in the 30th minute. The goal marked Mmodi’s second consecutive derby strike and Amakhosi’s 235th all-time derby goal.

Vilakazi continued to cause problems for the Pirates backline, nearly handing Chiefs the lead before halftime when his thunderous effort from a short corner routine was tipped over by Lebone Seema.

However, the momentum swung decisively after the restart. In the 54th minute, Thapelo Mokobodi timed his run perfectly to break through the Chiefs defense before unselfishly squaring to Tshepang Moremi, who slotted into an empty net to restore Pirates’ lead.

The goal knocked the wind out of Amakhosi. Pirates dominated midfield possession during the final 30 minutes, creating multiple chances to extend their cushion. Moremi hit the crossbar in the 83rd minute, while Oswin Appollis and Evidence Makgopa both missed close-range opportunities to seal the match earlier.

Chiefs’ frustration boiled over in stoppage time when central defender Inácio Miguel received a red card for a reckless kick to Ghampani Lungu, reducing Amakhosi to 10-man before the final whistle.

The victory handed Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou his second win in three derby outings, sending the Buccaneers to the summit of the log table.
