“We Wish Him Well”: Pietersen Breaks Silence On Mbonambi’s Controversial Sharks Exit

Sharks head coach JP Pietersen has wished Bongi Mbonambi well as the experienced Springbok hooker prepares to begin a new chapter with the Stormers following his departure from the Durban-based franchise.

The veteran two-time Rugby World Cup winner completed his return to the Stormers this week for a second stint, following a controversial end to his time with the Sharks.

Having last featured in an international match in November 2025 and represented the Sharks in January 2026, Mbonambi’s year has been disrupted by injuries and overshadowed by controversy following an internal disciplinary process stemming from a breach of team protocols during a pre-season camp.

Speaking about Mbonambi, Pietersen reflected on the hooker’s contribution to the Sharks over the years, including their EPCR Challenge Cup triumph, highlighting the influence he had within the squad and the memories he leaves behind.

“From our side, we just want to wish Bongi all the best as he’s taking a new chapter up at the Stormers,” Pietersen said.

The Sharks coach revealed that he had also personally reached out to Mbonambi to wish him well, expressing his hope that the hooker could rediscover the form that has made him such an important figure in South African rugby.

“I sent him a WhatsApp message too, just to wish him all the best. As a coach and former player too, you just want to wish the best player well, and hopefully he can get back into that Springbok mix and play Bongi’s good rugby.”

Pietersen also acknowledged the impact Mbonambi had made during his time at the Sharks, thanking him for his influence within the squad and the service he had given the club.

“From the Sharks’ point of view, we just want to thank Bongi for his influence in the group and for the years he’s been serving the Sharks. There are fond memories he shared with the players, and we want to wish him and his family all the best as he’s taking a new chapter up at the Stormers.”

Although their paths have now taken different directions, Pietersen believes it will not be long before the two sides cross paths again.

“Hopefully everything works out for him, and we will probably see him soon.”

That reunion could come as early as 5 December, when the Stormers travel to Durban to face the Sharks as the United Rugby Championship resumes following the international break.

For now, Pietersen’s message is one of appreciation, respect and goodwill towards a player who made a lasting contribution during his time in Sharks colours.
