Zwane And Vilakazi Falls Short As Usuthu Lose To Stellies

AmaZulu’s new era under Arthur Zwane and Vusi Vilakazi began with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday.

Despite the loss, the coaches were encouraged by their team’s performance, especially in the second half. AmaZulu pushed forward relentlessly, and Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens made several crucial saves.

Stellies punished Usuthu with a goal from Devin Titus in the first half. However, AmaZulu improved significantly in the second half and were rewarded with a goal from Tshepang Moremi.

The game went to extra time, where Stellenbosch’s Andre De Jong headed home the winning goal.

While this was a promising display from the new coaching duo, AmaZulu were unlucky not to win the game. Zwane and Vilakazi have a contract until the end of the season and are tasked with turning around the team’s fortunes.

One of the notable changes in the team was the introduction of new signing Richards Ofori in goal. Ofori made several impressive saves throughout the match.

This was the first-ever meeting between AmaZulu and Stellenbosch in a cup competition. Stellenbosch dominated much of the first half, with Ofori making several key saves.

Titus scored the opening goal in the 24th minute, finishing off a cross from De Jong. Stellenbosch continued to press forward, with Barns testing Ofori on several occasions.

AmaZulu made changes at halftime, introducing Ighodaro and Wayde Jooste. Jooste’s impact was immediate, as he assisted Moremi’s goal in the 53rd minute.

AmaZulu had more chances in the second half, but Stephens made some excellent saves to keep Stellenbosch in the game.

The game went to extra time, where De Jong scored the winning goal. AmaZulu had a late chance to equalize, but Hendrick Ekstein’s shot was saved by Stephens.

Zwane and the team were disappointed to lose the game, but they will take positives from their performance.
