Zwane: Ngwenya Can Win The PSL Golden Shoe
AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane believes striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has the quality to claim this season’s Betway Premiership Golden Boot award.
Ngwenya nodded home a fourth-minute header as Usuthu edged Polokwane City 1-0 at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. The victory consolidated AmaZulu’s third-place standing on the log, moving them to 16 points after seven matches.
It was Ngwenya’s eighth league goal of the campaign, pulling him three goals clear of Richards Bay’s Nqaba Xulu at the top of the scoring charts.
The Zimbabwean marksman has now scored in all seven league fixtures for Usuthu this season, matching the PSL record for scoring in consecutive matches previously shared by Grant Young (1999) and Esau Kanyenda (2002).
“Yes, he does have the capability to win the Golden Boot,” said Zwane.
“He has got the qualities. The only thing we are trying to do right now is protect him and not put him under pressure.
“Hence, I’m saying the other players must come to the party and score goals. It’s not that we are not creating goal-scoring opportunities. On Saturday, we should have scored more than one, so that he doesn’t think too much that if he is not scoring, he is failing the team.
“Other players must also play their part. Having said that, obviously, before he scores goals, there will always be an assist — a player who will assist him in scoring — so that it becomes a build-up.
“We are happy for him, and hopefully he continues where he left off when we come back from the international break.”
Ngwenya’s stellar performances earned him a call-up to the Zimbabwe national team for their upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers—away to Sierra Leone on September 24 and home to DR Congo four days later.
Zwane, who celebrated the victory over Rise and Shine as an early birthday gift ahead of his birthday on Sunday, emphasized that grinding out results remains the team’s immediate priority while their tactical playing pattern continues to evolve.
“We will work on our performances as we go along. I think what is key right now is to get the results,” said Zwane.
“If you can come here and get maximum points, since it is never easy, I should give credit to the players.
“I think they did very well.”
