Pirates Hope Van Rooyen Recovers For Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates will be anxiously awaiting news on the fitness of Deano van Rooyen ahead of the crucial Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
Van Rooyen, a key player for Pirates since his off-season arrival from Stellenbosch, has been impressive for the Soweto giants.
However, he was stretchered off in the 50th minute of their 3-1 Nedbank Cup victory over Richards Bay on Sunday after suffering an elbow to the cheekbone.
“It was an elbow in the cheekbone,” said Jose Riveiro.
“It swollen and let’s see.”
Siyabonga Ndlozi replaced Van Rooyen, having also come on as a substitute against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League last weekend.
The good news for Pirates is that right-back Bandile Shandu has returned to action and featured against Richards Bay. Shandu could potentially fill in for Van Rooyen if the latter is unable to recover in time.
Van Rooyen, who signed a contract with Pirates until 2027, has made 18 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
If fit, Van Rooyen could face his cousin, Ashley du Preez, who plays for Chiefs. Du Preez joined the Soweto giants in 2022/23 and can operate across the front line. He scored twice in last season’s Soweto Derby, although Chiefs ultimately lost 3-2 at FNB Stadium.
