Pirates Edge Past Richards Bay To Advance in Nedbank Cup

Orlando Pirates kicked off their Nedbank Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Richards Bay at the packed King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
Pirates rode their luck at times, particularly in the second half, after scoring two quick goals through Patric Maswanganyi in the first period. However, they ultimately secured their place in the round of 16, aiming for a third consecutive Nedbank Cup title.
The match, played in front of a sold-out crowd, saw Pirates dominate possession early on. Maswanganyi was cautioned for a simulation attempt, and shortly after, fired a shot over the bar. Richards Bay defender Siyabonga Dube was also booked for a foul on Relebohile Mofokeng, a crucial player for Pirates in their previous Nedbank Cup triumph.
The atmosphere erupted in chants of “Weeh Tito, Weeh Tito” when Maswanganyi opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing off a brilliant layoff from Mofokeng. Six minutes later, Pirates doubled their lead. Mofokeng’s split pass found Alan Otieno, who scored his second goal of the match.
Richards Bay struggled to create chances, but Thato Mohlamme, son of former Pirates captain Benedict Tso Vilakazi, rattled the crossbar with a powerful shot.
Pirates, demonstrating their maturity and experience, showcased their dominance, having recently defeated Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League and currently occupying second place in the DStv Premiership. They also claimed the MTN8 title earlier in the season.
Richards Bay pulled one goal back early in the second half when Thulani Gumede’s shot was parried by Melusi Buthelezi, allowing Yanela Mbtuhuma to score for the home side. This sparked a brief resurgence from Richards Bay, who created a few more scoring opportunities. However, Pirates ultimately held on to secure the victory.
Substitute Kabelo Dlamini helped to restore balance for Pirates, who ultimately emerged victorious. Tshegofatso Mabasa sealed the deal with a late goal, ensuring a comfortable victory for the Buccaneers.
This win extends Pirates’ unbeaten record in the Nedbank Cup to 11 matches under coach Jose Riveiro.
