Cape Town City Break Winless Run As Magesi And Highbury Lead Pace
Cape Town City finally secured their first win of the 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship season after beating Hungry Lions 2-1 at Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Citizens came into the match searching for their first victory after losing their opening game against Real Native before drawing 1-1 with Leicesterford City in Cape Town during the week.
With three matchdays now completed, only Magesi and Highbury have managed to win all three of their opening league matches.
Magesi continued their impressive start to the campaign with a 3-1 away victory over Leicesterford City at Mafori Mphahlele Stadium on Saturday.
Highbury, meanwhile, maintained their perfect record with a narrow 1-0 away win over Upington City at Mxolisi Dicky Jacob’s Stadium.
Several other matches were played across the weekend, with Real Native beating Midlands Wanderers 1-0 at home on Friday.
A North West derby between Orbit College and Lerumo Lions was also scheduled to take place on Friday, but the match was abandoned.
On Saturday, Hope FC recorded a 1-0 victory over North-West University at Fanie Du Toit Stadium, while Venda FC suffered a 2-0 home defeat to the University of Pretoria.
The final match of Matchday Three took place on Sunday at Kanyamazane Stadium, where Gomora United travelled from Gauteng and secured a 1-0 victory over The Bees.
The 2026/27 Motsepe Foundation Championship will continue next weekend with Matchday Four, as the teams look to build momentum in the first division.
