Pirates Wasteful Pirates Held By Inspired Jean Ramdiane In CAF Opener

Orlando Pirates were held to a goalless draw by Mauritius’ Lacure Waves in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round at Cote-d’Or National Sports Complex on Sunday evening.

The Buccaneers struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half, with Boitumelo Radiopane coming closest to breaking the deadlock after creating two opportunities.

Radiopane had his first chance in the 15th minute when he tested Lacure Waves goalkeeper Jean Ramdiane, who produced a fine save to deny the 23-year-old forward.

The Pirates attacker had another opportunity in the 36th minute after receiving a cross from the right flank, but he was unable to convert as the visitors went into the break without finding the back of the net.

The second half saw Deon Hotto become more involved in Pirates’ attacking play, with the Namibian international also having several opportunities to open the scoring.

Hotto was presented with a set-piece opportunity in the 49th minute, but his effort was saved by Ramdiane, who once again stood between Pirates and the opening goal.

The experienced winger had another chance from a set piece in the 63rd minute, but Ramdiane was equal to the effort and made another important save.

Hotto continued to search for a breakthrough and tried his luck from outside the box in the 70th minute, but his effort failed to find the target.

Despite their efforts, Pirates could not find a way past the Mauritius side as the match ended 0-0, with neither team managing to score in either half.

The two sides will meet again next weekend for the second leg at Orlando Amstel Arena, where Pirates will look to secure a victory and advance to the second preliminary round.

The Buccaneers were eliminated at the second preliminary round stage of the Champions League last season and will be determined to avoid another early exit this time around.
