Sundowns Sign Ex-Pirates Defender

Mamelodi Sundowns has announced the signing of right-back Deano van Rooyen following his recent release from Orlando Pirates.
The move comes as Sundowns urgently seek defensive depth following a long-term injury to first-choice right-back Khuliso Mudau, which will keep the Bafana Bafana international sidelined for an extended period.
Prior to Van Rooyen’s arrival, Zuko Mdunyelwa and Thapelo Morena were the club’s only options on the right flank, though Morena is frequently deployed in advanced attacking roles.
Van Rooyen spent two seasons at Soweto giants Orlando Pirates after joining from Stellenbosch FC in August 2024. However, increased squad competition—following the arrival of Kamogelo Sebelebele and wing-back Ghampani Lungu—severely restricted his first-team opportunities.
Before his departure, Van Rooyen had not featured for the Buccaneers in any matches this season, despite Pirates winning three of their opening four fixtures.
Despite his limited game time toward the end of his tenure, Van Rooyen enjoyed a trophy-laden stint in Soweto, departing with four major honors:
- 2x MTN8 titles
- 1x Carling Knockout
- 1x Betway Premiership title (completing a domestic treble last season)
With his Pirates contract set to expire at the end of the current season, both parties agreed to part ways. Across his two seasons with the club, Van Rooyen made 51 appearances in all competitions, registering one goal and one assist.
