Pirates And van Rooyen Part Ways

Orlando Pirates have confirmed the departure of Deano van Rooyen after just two seasons with the Soweto giants, with both parties agreeing to part ways by mutual consent.

Van Rooyen joined Pirates from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, but following the arrival of Kamogelo Sebelebele and, more recently, wing-back Ghampani Lungu, his opportunities for regular game time have become limited.

He has not featured in any matches since the start of the season, with Pirates winning three of their four games so far.

Despite his limited opportunities towards the end of his spell, Van Rooyen leaves the club with four major trophies to his name: two MTN8 titles, the Carling Knockout and the Betway Premiership title, which completed a domestic treble for Pirates last season.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that Deano van Rooyen will be leaving the club after the player and the club agreed to part ways by mutual consent,” said Pirates in a statement.

“The decision follows open conversations between Deano and the Club, with both sides agreeing that the time is right for him to begin a new chapter in his career.

“Van Rooyen joined the Buccaneers from Stellenbosch FC ahead of the 2024/25 season, arriving as one of the most consistent full-backs in the Betway Premiership. At the Club, he delivered exactly what was asked of him.

“Whether starting or coming off the bench, Deano carried himself as a model professional throughout his time at the Club, where he made over 50 appearances.

“Orlando Pirates Football Club would like to thank Deano for his contribution and wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Van Rooyen’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season. During his time at Pirates, he made 51 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

There is a strong possibility that Van Rooyen could return to Stellenbosch FC.
