Sirino Delivers Historic Continental Debut Win For Durban City

Veteran midfielder Gaston Sirino was the hero for Durban City as his second-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Burundian side Rukinzo FC in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round tie at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.

The victory marked Durban City’s first-ever appearance in CAF InterClub competition after they secured their place by winning the Nedbank Cup during the 2025/26 season.

Their opponents, Rukinzo FC, also earned their place in the CAF Confederation Cup after winning the 2026 Burundi President’s Cup, setting up an intriguing first-round meeting between the two sides.

Durban City started brightly and looked dangerous in the first half, creating several scoring opportunities. However, the Citizens were unable to capitalise on their chances and went into the break without finding the back of the net.

The home side continued to push for the breakthrough after the restart, with Sirino coming close in the 57th minute. The veteran midfielder found space inside the box and unleashed a right-footed effort, but his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Sirino would not be denied for long, though, as Durban City finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute.

The midfielder found the back of the net with another right-footed effort from inside the box, with Samkelo Maseko providing the assist to give the Citizens a deserved 1-0 lead.

Durban City continued to control the game after taking the lead and created further opportunities as they searched for a second goal. However, they were unable to extend their advantage before the final whistle.

The match eventually ended 1-0 in favour of Durban City, giving them a narrow advantage heading into the second leg.

The two sides will meet again in Burundi next weekend, with Durban City now looking to complete the job and advance to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
