Chiefs Rout Free Agents To Book Last 16 Spot

Kaizer Chiefs claimed a comfortable 4-0 victory over SAFA Gauteng ABC Motsepe League outfit Free Agents FC at FNB Stadium on Sunday to book their spot into the Nedbank Cup last-16, thanks to a Pule Mmodi First half brace and goals from Miguel Inacio and Ranga Chivaviro.

Chiefs were under pressure to win after fierce rivals Orlando Pirates won 3-1 earlier against Richards Bay in Durban.

With the Soweto Derby against Pirates on Saturday, Chiefs saw the fixture as an opportunity to rotate the team as Bruce Bvuma, Miguel, George Matlou, Mmodi, and Wandile Duba were the only players to retain their places in the team that claimed a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in their last outing.

Nasreddine Nabi’s charges made their intentions clear from the onset as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo rattled the upright with a strong shot four minutes from kick-off. Reeve Frosler also tested Ugonna Igidimba in the seventh minute, but the Free Agents keeper was equal to the task.

The Soweto giants opened the scoring in the 18th minute through Mmodi, who capitalized on Bvuma’s long ball to lob the visitors’ goalkeeper. The former Golden Arrows talisman completed his brace seven minutes later after a quick one-two with Wandile Duba in the box.

Mmodi had a chance to grab his third of the match close to the half-hour mark after Igidimba came out for an inviting ball which he failed to collect, allowing Mmodi to roll it over to Happy Mashiane, who squandered the opportunity.

Bvuma was called into action in the 33rd minute after the visitors whipped a cross into the box, forcing the Chiefs shot-stopper to make a block with his hands. Duba was forced off injured on the stroke of halftime and made way for Chivaviro. The home team maintained their lead at the interval.

The second half saw both technical teams refresh their starting XI, with Chiefs introducing Gaston Sirino and Sibongiseni Mthethwa in place of Ngcobo and Maart. Agents made four changes in a bid to stage a comeback.

Teenage sensation Mfundo Vilakazi drew a save from second-half substitute Tsebo Shabalala in goal, who parried the ball out for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Miguel made it 3-0 after his header connected with Happy Mashiane’s ball two minutes after the hour mark.

Agents were reduced to 10 men after Saheed Adebayo was given his marching orders for protesting against Chiefs’ third goal. Tebogo Potsane entered the fray in the 70th minute, replacing Mmodi. Chivaviro completed the rout in the 83rd minute, with Matlou grabbing the assist.
