“60 Years Of Drama!” Tuchel Fires Back At Critics After England Claims Historic World Cup Bronze

England coach Thomas Tuchel believes his players delivered the perfect response after facing fierce criticism from supporters and the English media, insisting that performances on the pitch are the only way to silence doubters.

Tuchel came under intense scrutiny following England’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-final earlier this week.

The Three Lions took the lead but retreated deep into their own half after Tuchel introduced additional defenders in an attempt to protect their advantage.

The tactical approach backfired as Argentina struck twice in the closing stages to book their place in the final, leaving Tuchel heavily criticised by fans and pundits, particularly in England.

However, England bounced back emphatically on Saturday, defeating France 6-4 in the third-place play-off to claim the bronze medal. The victory ended the nation’s long wait for success on football’s biggest stage, securing England’s first FIFA World Cup medal since lifting the trophy in 1966.

This 10-goal madness broke the previous record for the highest-scoring third-place play-off in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing France’s 6-3 victory over West Germany in 1958.

The result also ended another painful chapter in England’s World Cup history. Since their triumph in 1966, England had reached the semi-finals only twice before this tournament—in 1990 and 2018—and lost both the semi-finals and the subsequent third-place play-off matches.

This time, Tuchel’s side ensured history would not repeat itself.

Speaking after the victory, Tuchel admitted the reaction following the defeat to Argentina had been difficult to accept, saying the criticism made it feel as though England had suffered an early group-stage exit rather than reaching the last four.

“Yesterday’s (Friday’s) press conference felt as if we had gone out in the group stage without a win, to be very honest,” he said.

“And 24 hours later we have the biggest success in 60 years. So we try not to take the lows too low or the highs too high, both for ourselves and for the team.

“I think the disappointment and drama about what happened against Argentina went too far. But that’s part of football. The best thing you can do is respond on the pitch and get the next win.

“Everything else is just talking, and talking doesn’t get you points or victories. You have to endure it, stay strong, keep believing and keep working.

“I’m glad that we showed the reaction we wanted. It was very impressive.”

Another major talking point throughout the tournament was Tuchel’s decision to leave Bukayo Saka on the bench for the entire semi-final against Argentina. The move drew widespread criticism, particularly after England surrendered their lead.

Saka responded spectacularly against France, producing one of the performances of the tournament by scoring a hat-trick and earning the Player of the Match award as England secured third place.

Saka became only the third English player ever to score a hat-trick at a FIFA World Cup, joining Sir Geoff Hurst (1966) and Harry Kane (2018).

Despite the criticism surrounding his selection, Tuchel insisted Saka remains one of the most important players in his squad and explained why he made the difficult decision to leave him out of the semi-final.

“Bukayo is a key player for me. He was ready to play in the World Cup,” Tuchel said.

“I still felt the responsibility as a coach, considering everything he has been through, to manage him carefully. He started several matches during the tournament.

“It was a tough decision for me to leave him out of the semi-final. After the Norway match, I felt Morgan Rogers had something special to offer us with his physicality and presence against Argentina.

“We had Bukayo warming up several times during the Argentina game. We were ready to make the change, but the match became so chaotic that, in the end, we opted for a different option.

“Nothing has changed during the World Cup for me. Bukayo is a fantastic teammate, a fantastic footballer and a key player for us, and that will not change. He showed it again today, and I’m happy for him, happy for us. It was an excellent performance.”

England will now shift their focus to the UEFA Nations League and preparations for UEFA Euro 2028, with Tuchel aiming to build on the momentum from their World Cup campaign as he looks to guide the Three Lions to major international success.
