Boks Star To Be Back In March

Springbok fullback Damian Willemse has confirmed his return to the Stormers in March of next year.

Willemse, speaking to PremierSports in England on the sidelines on Saturday, is currently injured but traveled to England. The Stormers suffered a defeat to Harlequins in the Investec Champions Cup at the Stoop.

He missed the entirety of the 2024 Springboks season, comprising 13 matches with 11 victories, including a clean sweep in the November Autumn Nations Series – the first since 2013. Willemse’s absence at fullback was filled by Willie le Roux, chasing his 100th cap, and Aphelele Fassi.

The 26-year-old, who can also play at fly-half, saw that position occupied by teammates Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Manie Libbok, and Handré Pollard. His last appearance for the Springboks came in the Rugby World Cup final in October.

The utility back has been sidelined since October, when he scored a try while playing at inside center for the Stormers against defending United Rugby Championship champions Glasgow Warriors.

Despite his absence, Willemse expressed confidence in the players at coach John Dobson’s disposal, believing they can achieve great things.

“There are some very talented players emerging. Connor Evans is certainly one to watch, along with Jason Marshall and Jonathan Road. He’s also a very good center within our system,” said Willemse.

“Paul de Villiers, the flanker, is an outstanding player. And I believe Ruhan Nel is probably one of our most promising young players coming through the system this year. Overall, I think we have a very good, young, and energetic team.”

Willemse’s name has become synonymous with brilliance in world rugby after his audacious decision to call a mark during the World Cup quarter-final against France in his own 22-meter area, putting immense pressure on the Springboks’ front row to win the scrum.

The world was astonished by this move, as the Springboks were seemingly exploring every opportunity to exploit the weaknesses of the host nation.

When asked before the game if they would consider calling a mark in his own 22 and contesting the scrum, he simply laughed and replied, “We’ll see.”

It was a tough weekend for South African sides in the Investec Cup, with the Blue Bulls and Sharks also suffering defeats on Saturday.
