“Stretch The Lead!” Mdunyelwa Sends Clear Warning Ahead Of Buffalo City Return

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Zuko Mdunyelwa says he will face his former club, Chippa United, with one clear goal in mind: widening the gap at the top of the Betway Premiership table over rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
Sundowns currently sit top of the standings with 19 points from seven matches, sitting six points clear of second-placed Pirates. However, the Buccaneers hold games in hand—a gap that expands to three matches this weekend as Pirates compete in the CAF Champions League preliminary round.
The fixture was originally scheduled for Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, but due to pitch redevelopment, it was relocated to East London’s Buffalo City Stadium.
Despite its compact size, Buffalo City Stadium holds fond memories for the Brazilians, who clinched the 2024/25 league title there during head coach Miguel Cardoso’s debut season.
That championship-sealing performance saw goals from Iqraam Rayners and a brace by Arthur Sales, with Marcelo Allende taking home the Man of the Match award.
“It is important to understand that teams attack in different ways depending on where they sit on the log and try to expose us in certain aspects,” said Mdunyelwa.
“We also understand that the pitch we are playing on is where we won the league. It is important to pick up where we left off and stretch our lead at the top.”
Chippa United, led by coach Brandon Truter, currently occupy 12th place with four points from five matches (four draws and one loss).
Mdunyelwa has enjoyed increased game time following an injury to Bafana Bafana right-back Khuliso Mudau, who remains sidelined long-term.
Sundowns subsequently signed Deano van Rooyen to bolster the position and continue to be linked with Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi.
Addressing the intense competition for places, Mdunyelwa admitted the journey has demanded strong mental resilience.
“It is important to be mentally strong and wait for your opportunity; wait for your opportunity, listen to the coaches and understand what is expected from you,” he said.
“I think I have been trying my utmost best to understand what is expected of me. Also, push, be mentally strong, and fight.”
