Royal AM’s Sale Delay Sparks Player Exodus

The protracted delay in the sale of Royal AM’s Betway Premiership status is creating significant instability within the PSL.

This uncertainty is leading to a player exodus, raising concerns about Royal AM’s ability to field a competitive team should they be required to complete their remaining league fixtures.

Numerous PSL clubs are capitalizing on the situation, acquiring Royal AM players. Sekhukhune United joined the list by signing Khulekani Shezi, who made a second-half appearance in their 1-0 Nedbank Cup quarterfinal loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday.

Golden Arrows secured the signings of Shadrack Kobedi, Sabelo Sithole, and Ayabule Maxwele. Notably, the Arrows’ coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, expressed confusion regarding the circumstances of these signings after their victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. Sithole was rested due to a heavy training load.

Adding to Royal AM’s woes, defender Sbangani Zulu and attacking midfielder Mfundo Thikazi have joined Richards Bay. The legality of these transfers remains unclear, given Royal AM’s current administration by a South African Revenue Service (SARS) appointed curator, tasked with recovering an alleged R40 million debt owed by club owner Shauwn Mkhize.

SARS seized Mkhize’s assets in November, leading to the suspension of Royal AM’s league matches. The club, with 19 games outstanding, last played on 29 December, losing 3-1 to TS Galaxy. Milford, Royal AM’s scheduled Nedbank Cup opponent, received a bye.

A proposed sale to Durban businessman Chockalingam “Roy” Moodley collapsed at the last minute. Moodley’s Global Investment company failed to complete the required payment to SARS.

Curator Jaco Venter informed the PSL Executive Committee, who are considering Royal AM’s future participation. SARS has indicated legal action against Global Investment. However, Sportswire was informed that Moodley remains determined to acquire the club.

Due to this impasse, the PSL is reportedly considering scrapping relegation for the current season and potentially expanding the league to 18 teams for the 2025/26 season. This decision, pending PSL Executive Committee approval, would likely involve promoting the top two clubs from the Motsepe Foundation Championship
