Durban City To Honour Fixture Against Callies Despite Zondi’s Death

The grieving Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Durban City, has confirmed their decision to proceed with their scheduled match against Pretoria Callies at Chatsworth Stadium on Friday.

The club was given time to mourn following the tragic passing of Sinamandla Zondi on Tuesday.

Zondi collapsed and received immediate medical attention on-site before being urgently transported to Chatsmed Garden Hospital. Sadly, he passed away at the hospital shortly before 20:00.

The confirmation of this tragic news led to the suspension of Tuesday’s match. The PSL offered Durban City the option to postpone their upcoming fixture.

However, the league announced on Wednesday that the club has chosen to play their scheduled match this Friday.

Durban City has since officially confirmed that the match will indeed go ahead despite the profound loss of Zondi.

“Fixture update: Following consultation with all relevant parties, the club can confirm that Friday night’s fixture vs Pretoria Callies at the Chatsworth Stadium will proceed as scheduled,” Durban City stated on Thursday.

“We look forward to the support of our fans. Thank you for your continued support.”

City, who were rebranded from Maritzburg United at the beginning of the season, currently lead the Motsepe Foundation Championship table with 46 points after 25 matches.

The Durban-based team holds a three-point lead over second-placed Orbit College, who narrowed the gap with a victory over Hungry Lions on Wednesday and have one game in hand.
