Amajita Falls To Egypt In AFCON U20 Opener

Amajita rattled the post three times but still suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to host nation Egypt in their opening Group A game of the AFCON U20 tournament at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
Mohamed Hadad scored the decisive goal for Egypt in the 62nd minute, capitalizing on Amajita’s defensive woes.
The match was evenly contested in the first half, with both teams creating scoring opportunities.
Amajita goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe made a crucial save early on, while winger Mfundo Vilakazi’s long-range effort hit the bar. Kutlwano Letlhaku also had a chance, but his shot went wide.
Egypt’s tempo slowed after 25 minutes, allowing them to make tactical substitutions. The hosts introduced Hadad and Seif Essam, with Moamen Sherif leaving the field due to injury. Despite the chances created, the first half ended goalless.
Amajita made an early substitution in the second half, introducing Sfiso Timba for Siviwe Nkwali. However, disaster struck when captain Asekho Tiwani collided with Lowe, forcing him out and bringing Gopolang Taunyana into the game. Shortly after, Hadad scored the winning goal.
Amajita pushed hard for an equalizer, with Letlhaku hitting the post and Shakeel April, who came on as a substitute, having a header saved. Despite their efforts, they couldn’t find the equalizer. Mdaka’s side has since dropped to the bottom of Group A following this loss.
In other Group A action, Zambia and Sierra Leone played out a goalless draw. Amajita’s next challenge will be against Tanzania at Suez Canal Stadium on Wednesday, where they will aim to bounce back and secure their first win.
The loss to Egypt will undoubtedly serve as a learning experience for Amajita, who will look to regroup and come back stronger against Tanzania. With the right adjustments and determination, they can still make a strong impression in the tournament.
