Former Chiefs Coach Suffers Relegation In Europe

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has suffered relegation in Europe after failing to help Portuguese top-flight outfit Boavista avoid the drop, as they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Arouca in their last match of the season.

The Scotsman, who won two league titles at Chiefs between 2012 and 2015, was appointed in April with five matches remaining. The ex-Bafana Bafana mentor won two games and lost the other three to settle for a bottom-placed finish with 24 points collected in the Liga Portugal.

It remains to be seen whether the former Glamour Boys’ tactician will be retained for next season, with reports in Portugal insinuating the club would be keen to continue with the 71-year-old as they target a timely return to the elite division.

Meanwhile, former Chiefs striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana scored a decisive goal for USM Alger against relegation-threatened Olympique Akbou in the Algerian Ligue 1 on Monday night, amidst an uncertain future at the Algerian club.

Walid Zamoum opened the scoring for the visitors before the ex-Chiefs star leveled matters in stoppage time for the troubled Algiers-based outfit, to boost their quest for a place in the CAF Confederations Cup in the upcoming season.

USM, who sacked coach Marcos Paqueta just two months into his tenure after a Confederations Cup exit at the hands of fellow Algerian side CS Constantine, are in sixth place on the log standings with 37 points amassed from 27 league outings.

Bimenyimana has so far scored three goals and provided a solitary assist in 11 games across all competitions since joining the club in February 2025. The nomadic 27-year-old forward penned a deal until January 2026.

However, despite his utmost best to settle in, the Burundi international’s future hangs in the balance as he has so far failed to command a regular place in the starting XI, with whispers echoing from Algeria suggesting his contract will be reviewed at the end of the season.
