AmaZulu Appoint New Goalkeeper Coach

AmaZulu has appointed Posnett Omony as their new goalkeeper coach, Sportswire has learned.

Omony steps in to replace Wendell Robinson, who has departed Usuthu to join coach Rulani Mokwena at MC Alger in Algeria as their goalkeeper coach.

Robinson is reuniting with Mokwena, with whom he previously worked extensively at Mamelodi Sundowns, contributing to numerous league titles, a CAF Champions League victory, and various domestic cup competitions.

Mokwena’s appointment in Algeria led him to bring Robinson along, leaving AmaZulu in search of a new goalkeeper coach once again.

However, Sportswire can confirm that AmaZulu has moved swiftly to appoint Omony ahead of the new season. Omony was most recently with Royal AM, a club that unfortunately no longer exists after its PSL membership was terminated.

This termination followed Royal AM’s chairperson, Shauwn Mkhize, who owed the South African Revenue Services (SARS) R40 million. As the debt went unpaid, the club was removed from the league entirely because it was seized, reducing the league to 15 teams and leading to clubs playing 28 matches.

Omony was left without a club but has now found a new home with AmaZulu, allowing him to remain in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal, where Royal AM was based. The Ugandan international has had multiple stints with PSL clubs throughout his playing career, featuring for Bloemfontein Celtic, Black Leopards, Vasco da Gama, Roses United, and Mthatha Bucks.

This marks Omony’s third appointment as a goalkeeper coach in the PSL. In addition to his recent role at Royal AM, he held a similar position with Chippa United between November 2017 and July 2018.
