Frosler Dismisses Ex-Chiefs Trio Threat Ahead Of Stellenbosch Clash
Kaizer Chiefs defender Reeve Frosler says his side will not be distracted by former Amakhosi players Given Msimango, George Matlou and Ashley Du Preez when they face Stellenbosch FC in Tuesday’s Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium.
Frosler believes Chiefs must remain focused on their own game despite Stellenbosch having players who understand how Amakhosi operate. He insists that his team’s priority is to execute its game plan and continue improving on the pitch.
Msimango, Matlou and Du Preez were all associated with Chiefs last season before moving to Stellenbosch. Matlou left Amakhosi after his contract expired, while Msimango and Du Preez joined Stellies in a swap deal that saw Langelihle Phili move in the opposite direction.
However, Phili is currently injured and will miss Tuesday’s encounter against his former club.
Phili was among the scorers when Stellenbosch defeated Chiefs 2-1 at FNB Stadium last season.
Another player who was at Chiefs last season is Gopolang Taunyana, although he was part of the club’s reserve team before joining Stellenbosch.
Despite the presence of these familiar faces in the opposition camp, Frosler insists Chiefs will not allow that to influence their approach to the match.
“For us, it’s about focusing on what we need to do,” he said.
“There are a couple of players who were here previously and have since moved on, and only two or three of those players.
“They might have an idea of what we’re trying to do, but they will still try to stop us. Our focus remains on ourselves and what we need to do on the pitch.”
Chiefs will also be looking to put their disappointing record against Stellenbosch last season behind them after suffering three defeats against the Cape Winelands outfit. Two of those losses came in cup competitions, while Tuesday’s encounter presents Amakhosi with another opportunity to secure a positive result against Stellies in the Betway Premiership.
Frosler, however, insists that Chiefs must look forward rather than dwell on last season’s setbacks, pointing out that cup matches and league fixtures present different challenges.
“I think it’s important to distinguish between cup games and league games because they are very different,” he added.
“For us, the focus is on ourselves and how we can become better.
“We don’t look at last season because a lot of changes happened during the off-season.
“Our focus is on reviewing the first seven games of this season, identifying what we can improve, what we need to do better, and what we need to maintain.”
With Stellenbosch boasting several players familiar with the Chiefs setup, Tuesday’s encounter will test Amakhosi’s ability to stick to their game plan and deliver a strong performance. A victory would also provide Chiefs with an opportunity to put last season’s disappointing results against Stellies behind them and maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign.
