Le Roux Joins Portsmouth After Single Meeting

Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux revealed that it took just one meeting to convince him to join English Championship side Portsmouth.

The 25-year-old South African international has signed a three-year deal at Fratton Park, moving from Swedish top-flight side Värnamo. The transfer is pending international clearance and the issuance of a work permit.

“One meeting was all it took,” said Le Roux. “I don’t think anyone could come out of that meeting and not want to join Portsmouth. It was a really successful meeting, and now I’m here and I’m very happy.”

Le Roux began his career in his homeland, coming through the ranks at SuperSport United before moving to Sweden to play for Varbergs BoIS. He then spent a season in the Dutch top-flight with FC Volendam before joining IFK Värnamo last summer. Le Roux played a crucial role in helping Värnamo win a play-off to remain in the highest tier of Swedish football, making a total of 32 appearances for the club.

The central midfielder becomes the second South African to play for Pompey, following in the footsteps of Aaron Mokoena, who notably captained the side during his tenure. The 44-year-old Mokoena made 90 appearances for Portsmouth, scoring three goals and providing three assists. He also led them to the FA Cup final, where they ultimately lost to Chelsea.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho expressed his delight at the new signing. “Luke’s form over the past couple of seasons meant he not only found himself on our radar but also that of several other clubs,” Mousinho said. “So we’re delighted that he’s agreed to join Pompey, and we’ve brought in an experienced international player.”

Mousinho further described Le Roux’s playing style: “Luke is a holding midfielder who likes to sit in and dictate the play. He’s physically strong and can also handle the ball. It was a position we were looking to fill, and it is just what we needed. I’m excited to see him in action in a Pompey shirt.”
