Can Chiefs Challenge For The League? Nabi Respond

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has addressed whether Amakhosi can challenge for the league title next season, especially after their impressive Nedbank Cup victory, which included wins over rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

However, Nabi’s response was cautious, stating that Chiefs will approach next season “game by game” and see where that takes them.

For Chiefs to win the league, they face two significant challenges: the dominant Sundowns, who have clinched the league title for eighth consecutive seasons, and Pirates, who have consistently been the closest challengers, finishing second in the last three seasons.

Last season, Chiefs struggled against these two powerhouses in the league, with Pirates once again securing second place in the Betway Premiership table. Yet, Chiefs fared much better in cup competitions, notably defeating Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup semi-final and Pirates in the final.

Winning the league, which often requires a winning streak of close to 15 games, presents a different challenge entirely. Chiefs finished a disappointing ninth last season, leading to doubts about whether they can truly contend with Sundowns and Pirates next season.

“We are approaching the season — not only the league, but also the Nedbank Cup and the Confederation Cup — to take it game by game,” said Nabi.

“We will do everything we can to win each game. Of course, it’s not possible to win all games. Maybe it will be possible, but we are going to challenge for every game with whatever capabilities we have. After that, we will see where we stand.”

In the meantime, Chiefs are in Durban to face Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday at 3:00 PM. This will be their sixth pre-season match.
