Durban City Advance To The Confed Cup Second Round

Durban City made history by reaching the CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round following a 2-1 victory over Burundi’s Rukinzo FC on Sunday, securing a 3-1 win on aggregate.

City, who earned their Confederation Cup qualification by winning the Nedbank Cup last season, raced into an early lead with a first-minute strike from Kyle Jurgens before Samkelo Maseko doubled the advantage in the 35th minute.

Rukinzo pulled a goal back late in the match to set up a nerve-wracking finish for head coach Khalil Ben Youssef’s side, but Durban City held firm to seal the 2-1 win.

The KwaZulu-Natal outfit had traveled to Burundi holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium last weekend.

With this result, Durban City advance to the second preliminary round alongside Kaizer Chiefs, who received a first-round bye. Amakhosi, who finished third in the league last season, reached the Confederation Cup group stages in their previous campaign.
