Disaster For Petersen! Chiefs Captain Errors Again As Amakhosi Settle For Draw Against Polokwane City

Kaizer Chiefs surrendered a one-goal lead as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys appeared to be in control for large periods of the match and took the lead in the 29th minute through Lebohang Maboe. The midfielder produced a clever flick to send the ball past Polokwane City goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke and give Chiefs a deserved advantage.

The goal sparked celebrations among the Chiefs supporters, with club football manager Bobby Motaung also visibly delighted in the stands as his side took control of the contest.

However, Chiefs were unable to build on their lead and eventually paid the price for another costly defensive mistake.

Polokwane City found the equaliser in the 73rd minute after Giovanni Philander delivered a dangerous corner into the Chiefs penalty area. The ball was not dealt with by the visitors’ defence, allowing it to reach the near-post area, where Chiefs captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was beaten as the ball found the back of the net.

The equaliser once again highlighted concerns over Petersen’s recent performances and his involvement in several costly moments for Chiefs.

The goalkeeper was also at fault during Chiefs’ MTN8 quarter-final defeat against Golden Arrows, while mistakes from the captain have contributed to dropped points against Mamelodi Sundowns and Richards Bay in Durban.

Saturday’s result will therefore leave Chiefs frustrated after they appeared well placed to claim all three points following Maboe’s opener.

Instead, Polokwane City showed resilience to fight their way back into the contest and secure a share of the spoils.

For Chiefs, the draw represents another missed opportunity to turn promising performances into victories. They will now need to address their defensive lapses and improve their concentration if they are to maintain their challenge at the top end of the Betway Premiership.

The result also places renewed focus on Petersen, whose costly errors continue to prove a concern for the Soweto giants as the season progresses.
