Durban City To Count On Cape Town City Attacker

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt will count on Taahir Goedeman, who was signed on loan from Cape Town City.

The intentions were evident as Goedeman was on the bench when City beat Chippa United with a late goal from Joslin Kamatuka at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday.

The win put them at the top of the Betway Premiership table after two matches. The club, which rebranded from Maritzburg United at the start of last season, is now joint top with Kaizer Chiefs, who also won on Wednesday.

Goedeman is the fourth player Durban City has signed from Cape Town City, following Thabo Nodada, Darren Keet, and Haashim Domingo. Durban City acquired these players after being relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season.

Other New Signings and Hunt’s Comments

Other players signed by Durban City during the off-season include Kyle Jurgens from Stellenbosch (on loan), Liam de Kock, Siphelele Mthembu, Bokang Mokwena, Brooklyn Poggenpoel, and Frederick Asare.

Following the win against Chippa, coach Hunt, who has won the league four times in his career, was asked what it meant to win the first two games without conceding a goal. He responded that the team needs to handle the excitement and “downsurge” better, noting his experience in the game.

“I have done it a few times. We are going to find the upsurge, we are going to f****, sorry, we have to handle the better on the downsurge, that is what we are going to handle,” said Hunt.

“At the moment, it is nice, but we have to keep the mentality and work ethic, and that is all we can rely on. Our organization, our shape, our balance—everybody’s got their shoulder to the wheel, and you have half a chance in football.”

The team’s performance against Chippa showed the hallmark of Hunt’s previous teams, especially those at Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United.

“As I said tonight [Wednesday], this is not the football; this was a fight,” he continued. “It was a hard game to watch—boom, boom, it was very difficult.

“But that is what the PSL is about sometimes, the fight, and you are going to get along with these games. We have to make it count for us. Listen, we just have to try and get through this period now, settle down, get one or two in which we need, and at least have 17 or 18 players, and we will work it from there.”

City’s next game will be against Golden Arrows at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday night.
