Moosa Joins Velebayi And Others By Taking Spurs To DRC

Striker Therlo Moosa has enlisted the help of the South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU) in his bid to be declared a free agent by the PSL DRC.
This move comes after Moosa, who trained with and even scored for Siwelele FC, recently started training with Cape Town City.
The Free Agent Dispute
Cape Town Spurs is standing in Moosa’s way, insisting that he remains under contract and cannot be cleared to leave for free. The club argues that he, like players Luke Baartman, Liam Bern, and Asanele Velebayi, must be subject to a transfer fee.
Spurs’ contention is rooted in the belief that they deserve compensation for their players despite being relegated to the ABC Motsepe Regional League at the end of last season.
According to the NSL Handbook, players from a relegated club are considered free agents because the ABC Motsepe League is an amateur league, which effectively voids their professional contracts.
While the cases of Baartman and Velebayi were decided in their favor by the PSL DRC, allowing them to sign with Kaizer Chiefs, Spurs has appealed those decisions to the SAFA Appeals Board in hopes of overturning the rulings. Similarly, another player, Mervin Boji, was also cleared as a free agent by the DRC in a case won by SAFPU.
SAFPU’s Involvement and Case Status
A source revealed that Moosa’s case has been taken directly to the PSL DRC by SAFPU. “The Players’ Union won the Mervin Boji case to the PSL DRC,” the source stated. “We are also expecting the decision this week from the PSL when it comes to Therlo Moosa, and he will join Cape Town City.”
The outcomes of these cases have a domino effect on other players. The case of Liam Bern, for instance, has been postponed until the SAFA Appeals Board provides a ruling on the Velebayi and Baartman matters.
AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane has publicly stated that his club is waiting for the Chiefs’ situation to be resolved before they can move forward with registering Bern.
It remains to be seen what steps Spurs will take if they lose the Moosa case, which would allow the striker to join City in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
City was relegated from the Betway Premiership at the end of last season.
