Amajita Stun USA To Book World Cup Knockout Stages

Amajita battled against all odds to secure a 2-1 victory over the United States of America, booking their spot in the last 16 of the FIFA U20 World Cup at Estadio El Teniente on Sunday evening.

It was the game where the USA dominated possession, territory, and chances creation. With limited possession, Amajita were dangerous from counterattack, and Gomolemo Kekana almost scored his second from the same sort later on when he connected with the pass of Shakeel April.

It was the same with Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mfundo Vilakazi, who unleashed two powerful shots, but USA goalkeeper Adams Beaudry palmed them away.

However, the win marked a significant milestone for Amajita, who came into the game needing a draw or a win to progress to the knockout stage.

Although a loss would not have been the end of the road, their fate would have been determined by Nigeria’s result against Norway in Group E, making the stakes even higher.

Amajita finished second in Group E with six points, while the United States topped the group with the same number of points with a better goal difference.

New Caledonia was the only team to be eliminated from the group, having lost all its matches. France also secured a spot in the last 16 as one of the best third-place teams.

The game got off to a challenging start for Amajita, with the United States dominating the first 20 minutes and taking the lead in the 12th minute through Noah Cobb’s header from a set piece.

However, Amajita soon found their footing and earned their first significant chance in the 17th minute. Thato Sibiya’s excellent cross from the left side forced Joshua Wynder into an own goal, equalizing for the South Africans.
The equalizer seemed to spark a newfound confidence in Amajita, as they began to create scoring opportunities with ease.

Their hard work paid off just before halftime when Mfundo Vilakazi’s clever through pass found April, who delivered a precise cross to Kekana. Kekana’s clinical finish with his left foot gave Amajita the lead, and the South Africans went into the break feeling optimistic about their chances.

The second half was an intense affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. However, the defenders for both nations were up to the task, and the score remained unchanged for much of the half.

Amajita continued to push for a third goal, with Kekana and Vilakazi both coming close, but Beaudry made crucial saves to deny them.

In the 80th minute, Kekana’s shot from outside the box was saved, and Vilakazi also had a chance snatched away by Beaudry. In the end, Amajita’s efforts were rewarded, and they held on for a 2-1 victory.

This historic win marks the second time Amajita has reached the last 16 in the U/20 World Cup, following their impressive run in 2009 in Egypt.

Amajta will face the winner of Group F in the round of 16. It might be Colombia or Norway if one of them finishes in the group.
