Transfer BOMBSHELL: Gallants Face Losing Top Scorer

There is a strong possibility that Jaisen Clifford will leave Marumo Gallants at the end of the season unless his playing situation improves at the club.

This would be a major loss for Gallants, as the former SuperSport United dribbler is currently the club’s top scorer in the league.

Despite his contribution, coach Lafitte Alexander continues to use him mainly off the bench, a decision that has frustrated the player’s camp and prompted them to explore opportunities elsewhere.

Clifford, who joined Gallants at the start of the season on a one-year deal, was again named on the bench in the Carling Knockout Cup final loss against Orlando Pirates at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday under the young French coach.

The 29-year-old had hoped to start, especially after scoring against Pirates in a league match in August, where he also came off the bench to net the winning goal.

He followed that up with a stunning strike against Kaizer Chiefs in September at FNB Stadium, curling a superb effort that left Brandon Petersen rooted to the spot.

In that match too, Clifford came off the bench—replacing Daniel Msendami in the 72nd minute—to earn Gallants a point by cancelling out Khanyisa Mayo’s goal.

His most recent goal came in a league match against Magesi before the Carling final, where he was introduced for Phillip Ndlondlo, who was forced off with an injury in the 35th minute.

Just seven minutes after coming on, Clifford found the equaliser, cancelling out Kgomotso Mosadi’s opener.

Clifford’s longest run on the pitch this season came against AmaZulu in Durban in September, where he played until the 77th minute.

However, his limited playing time—despite delivering consistently when called upon—has left his camp seriously considering other options. They are now leaning towards not renewing his contract at the end of the season and pursuing opportunities elsewhere.
