Bafana To Face Cameroon

Bafana Bafana have discovered their opponent for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 round of 16, and it will be Hugo Broos’ former side, Cameroon, after the Indomitable Lions finished second in Group F.

Bafana Bafana had been waiting to learn their last-16 opponents after securing their place in the knockout stage on Monday with a dramatic 3–2 victory over Zimbabwe.

As the 1996 African champions finished second in Group B, they were set to face the team that ended second in Group F — a position contested by Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Mozambique, with Gabon already eliminated from contention.

On Wednesday evening, Cameroon sealed the round-of-16 clash by edging Mozambique 2–1 to finish runners-up in the group. In the other Group F encounter, Ivory Coast defeated Gabon 3–2 to claim top spot, while Mozambique progressed to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams despite their defeat.

Belgian coach Hugo Broos enjoyed a successful stint with Cameroon, guiding the Indomitable Lions to their fifth AFCON title in 2017 after a 2–1 victory over seven-time champions Egypt in the final, played in Gabon.

The last-16 match between Bafana Bafana and Cameroon is scheduled for Sunday at the Agdal Medina Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off set for 21:00.

This will be the first meeting between the two sides since the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, where both matches ended in goalless draws. Cameroon, however, went on to lift the AFCON trophy that year after defeating Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in the final.

Meanwhile, Group F winners Ivory Coast will face Burkina Faso on Tuesday, while Bafana Bafana’s neighbours Mozambique are set to meet one of South Africa’s fiercest rivals, Nigeria, on Monday.
