It’s Not Strange To Change Players – Broos

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has defended his decision to alter the team’s line-up, insisting that rotation is a normal part of football and not a sign of inconsistency, despite South Africa’s disappointing exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

Bafana Bafana were knocked out in the AFCON round of 16 after suffering a 2–1 defeat to Cameroon, with Broos making several changes to both personnel and formation from the starting line-up that featured in the three group-stage matches.

The Belgian coach opted for a back five, introducing Khuliso Mudau, Samukelo Kabini, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Siyabonga Ngezana and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, with Sibisi and Kabini making their tournament debuts in the starting XI.

Relebohile Mofokeng and Bathusi Aubaas were also handed their first starts of the competition.

The defeat marked Bafana Bafana’s first loss to Cameroon at the AFCON, having beaten the Indomitable Lions 3–0 in the opening match of the 1996 tournament hosted in South Africa — a competition the hosts went on to win.

When questioned about his team selection, Broos was unapologetic.

“First of all, I will not comment on that, and secondly, it’s not strange that players are replaced,” he said.

The 1996 African champions will now turn their attention to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico set to be Broos’ final major assignment as Bafana Bafana coach before his retirement.

Ultimately, Broos’ decision to reshuffle the line-up did not yield the desired result, and Bafana Bafana return home earlier than expected, a stark contrast to their bronze medal finish at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
