Etzebeth Returns For Connacht Clash
The Sharks have shifted their focus from the United Rugby Championship to their EPCR Challenge Cup Round of 16 clash against Connacht Rugby on Friday evening at the Dexcom Stadium.
Head coach JP Pietersen has struck a balance in his selection, injecting energy into the squad as he looks to manage the injury toll, test squad depth, and remain competitive during a demanding run of away fixtures.
“Injuries test the character of the squad, but they also give the next player an opportunity,” Pietersen said. “It’s about how you bounce back as a group.”
Despite the extensive injury list and the pressure of competing for knockout places in both competitions, Pietersen has named a strong side for Friday’s encounter.
“We’ve got some reinforcements back. Eben is now available, and hopefully his return will be a big boost for us.”
Nick Hatton retains his place at eighthman and will captain a team showing 13 changes to the starting line-up. However, experienced Springboks Ox Nche and Vincent Koch (front row), Eben Etzebeth (lock), and Edwill van der Merwe (wing) will provide leadership and presence.
Another Rugby World Cup winner, Makazole Mapimpi, also brings valuable experience and is the only player to retain his place in the starting XV following last week’s win over Cardiff.
Further international quality comes off the bench in the form of Vincent Tshituka and Ethan Hooker.
Friday’s match kicks off at 21:00.
