Mthombeni Targets Historic Nedbank Cup Final Berth

Casric Stars coach Bucks Mthombeni believes winning the Nedbank Cup would be a transformative milestone for the club, as they look to emulate the historic 2019 feat of TS Galaxy.

To date, Galaxy remains the only second-tier side to lift the trophy after their iconic upset against Kaizer Chiefs.

Casric’s 2026 campaign has been nothing short of “giant-killing.”

The Mpumalanga-based side reached the semi-finals by eliminating heavyweights Orlando Pirates in the Round of 16 and AmaZulu in the quarter-finals.

They now prepare to face Durban City in a high-stakes semi-final at Chatsworth Stadium this Sunday.

“It would be an incredible feeling,” Mthombeni said regarding the potential title.

“Beyond the trophy, it would attract more supporters and sponsors. Following in Galaxy’s footsteps by winning from the second division would be a historic moment—not just for Mpumalanga, but for the future of Casric Stars.”

Despite the pressure of the upcoming KZN trip, Mthombeni remains confident in his squad’s preparation. “We are ready for the semi-final. The mood is right, and the team is prepared for the challenge,” he concluded.
