Galaxy Edge Brave Milford On Penalties To Secure Final Spot

TS Galaxy survived a massive scare to defeat a resilient Milford FC 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of grueling action at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Sunday.

Norman Fischer stepped up to slot the decisive spot-kick, sending the Rockets into their second Nedbank Cup final since their historic 2019 triumph.

Adnan Beganovic’s side will face Durban City, who beat giant killers Casric Stars at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday, in the final.

This publication has been informed that the venue for the final will be announced on Thursday.

Like Galaxy, who eliminated Mamelodi Sundowns in the round of 16, Milford also enjoyed an impressive run to the semi-finals, knocking out Sekhukhune United along the way.

Milford arrived for this clash at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings with 40 points, level with second-placed Kruger United.

They now turn their attention to another crucial fixture on Wednesday, when they host Casric Stars at Umhlathuze Sports Ground.

Milford made a stunning start, taking the lead in the 11th minute. Bulelani Sigomoshe surged down the right flank, beating Solomon Letsoenyo before delivering a perfect cross. Siphosethu Ndlabi showed great improvisation to backheel the ball past Galaxy goalkeeper Ira Tape.

It was an impressive opening from the KwaZulu-Natal side, who looked in control during the early stages.

They nearly doubled their advantage when Mvelo Zikakayo broke through, but Fischer produced a crucial last-ditch tackle to avert the danger.

Galaxy, who struggled to create clear chances early on, eventually found their equaliser in the 55th minute. Seluleko Mahlambi delivered a cross that was headed home by Victor Letsoalo, the former AmaZulu striker. Letsoalo had earlier threatened with a powerful long-range effort that narrowly missed the target.

After the equaliser, clear-cut chances became scarce as both teams battled for control in midfield.

Milford appeared vulnerable to aerial balls into the box, and Igor Salatiel came close with a header, but it went off target.

Galaxy nearly grabbed a second goal when Letsoalo set up the onrushing Tshepo Kakora, but Sphamandla Hleza produced an outstanding save to keep Milford in the game.

Milford almost snatched a late winner in stoppage time, but Tape made a superb save to deny them, sending the match into extra time.

No goals were scored in the additional 30 minutes, forcing a penalty shootout, where Galaxy ultimately held their nerve to secure victory, ending Milford’s brave run in the competition.
