URC Playoff Race: Bulls, Stormers, Lions, And Sharks Face Defining Weekend
Pressure peaks in the URC as South Africa’s four franchises enter the fourth-last pool round.
With quarter-final spots and home-ground advantage at stake, the Bulls, Stormers, Lions, and Sharks face a season-defining weekend across South Africa and Wales.
The Vodacom Bulls face the Dragons in Wales on Friday, while three matches will take place on Saturday. The DHL Stormers host Connacht in Cape Town, the Fidelity Securedrive Lions take on the Glasgow Warriors in Johannesburg, and the Hollywoodbets Sharks wrap up the weekend’s action against the Ospreys, also in Wales.
The DHL Stormers are currently second on the standings with 51 points, trailing log leaders Glasgow Warriors by four. They will be hoping the fifth-placed Fidelity Securedrive Lions (43 points) can cause an upset against the Scots.
A defeat for Glasgow in Johannesburg could see the Capetonians either draw level on points or reclaim top spot if they secure a bonus-point victory, provided the Lions deny the visitors any bonus points.
For the Gauteng side, a win could prove even more rewarding. Should Ulster defeat Leinster, the Lions could climb into fourth place, putting them in a strong position to secure a home quarter-final next month.
The eighth-placed Vodacom Bulls (40 points) will aim to maintain their position in the top half of the standings against the 15th-placed Dragons. However, they will be wary of a tough challenge after the Welsh side’s recent victory over Zebre Parma in the EPCR Challenge Cup quarter-final.
The 10th-placed Hollywoodbets Sharks (33 points) face immense pressure to defeat the Ospreys, who trail them by just one position and three points. With only three matches remaining after this round, the Sharks are desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Vodacom Bulls will enter their clash as favourites, given their superior log position and record of eight wins compared to the Dragons’ two. They also boast an unbeaten record against the Newport-based side in their four previous Vodacom URC meetings.
However, the Bulls will be cautious not to underestimate their hosts, who arrive with momentum after two important away victories in the EPCR Challenge Cup playoffs. The Pretoria side will take confidence from their stronger attacking record, although their defensive edge is marginal, having conceded just 17 points fewer — setting the stage for a potentially thrilling encounter.
The DHL Stormers will also start as strong favourites against Connacht, bolstered by home-ground advantage and recent form. They will be especially motivated to deliver a standout performance in memory of team manager Chippie Solomon, who passed away last weekend.
The Capetonians have been formidable at home, suffering only one defeat this season, and they enter the clash on the back of three consecutive victories. With 11 wins compared to Connacht’s seven, and superior attacking and defensive statistics, the Stormers will back themselves to emerge victorious if they perform to their potential.
The Fidelity Securedrive Lions arguably face the toughest test of the local teams against the Glasgow Warriors at Ellis Park. The visitors have lost only three matches this season and currently sit at the top of the standings.
However, the Johannesburg side has been in excellent form at home, winning their last four matches, which will boost their confidence. They will also take encouragement from Glasgow’s recent 22–19 loss to Toulon in the Investec Champions Cup quarter-final, as well as the added challenge the visitors will face playing at altitude.
Adding intrigue to the contest, the Lions have scored 421 points compared to Glasgow’s 389. However, defence could prove decisive, with Glasgow having conceded 188 points fewer — the best defensive record in the competition.
The clash between the Hollywoodbets Sharks and the Ospreys in Bridgend promises to be equally compelling. The teams are closely matched on the standings, with the Sharks having secured just one more victory than their Welsh counterparts, and both sides are under pressure to break into the top eight.
The KwaZulu-Natal side holds a slight edge in attack, having scored 322 points to the Ospreys’ 293. However, the hosts have been marginally stronger defensively and are unbeaten in their last four home matches in the Vodacom URC. With so much at stake, the encounter is set to be a thrilling contest.
