Sundowns Beat Chiefs To Setup DDC Title Decider vs Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns delivered a clinical and composed performance to secure a 2–0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon, sending a strong message to league leaders Orlando Pirates in the race for the DStv Diski Challenge title.

The Brazilians entered the match under significant pressure after Pirates had already beaten Chippa United on Saturday. Anything less than a win would have effectively ended Sundowns’ title hopes, but they rose to the occasion with a disciplined and efficient display.

Following this crucial result, Sundowns remain second on the table with 69 points, just three behind Pirates, who lead with 72 as they chase their first Diski Challenge title since the competition’s inception in 2014. Sundowns, meanwhile, previously lifted the trophy in the 2016/17 season and are aiming to secure it for a second time.

The difference on the day came from Sipho Ngqabakane, who scored both goals in the first half to guide Sundowns to an important victory. His brace proved decisive in a match where Sundowns showed greater sharpness in front of goal.

Sundowns started on the front foot, applying consistent pressure on Amakhosi in the opening stages. Their breakthrough arrived in the 34th minute when Ngqabakane fired a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the back of the net.

They maintained their attacking momentum and doubled their advantage just before halftime. Ngqabakane struck again from close range after a defensive error by Pheko Phago allowed Sundowns to capitalise.

In the second half, Chiefs improved and managed to contain Sundowns more effectively. The game became more balanced, with fewer clear-cut chances created by either side. Despite their efforts, Chiefs were unable to find a way back into the match, while Sundowns controlled proceedings without extending their lead.

The title race will now be decided on the final day next weekend, when Sundowns and Pirates face off at UJ Soweto Stadium. Pirates need only a draw to be crowned champions, while Sundowns must win by a margin of three goals without conceding to snatch the title.
