Cardoso Lashes Out At Officiating After Chiefs Draw

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has voiced strong frustration over the officiating following his side’s 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.
The dropped points could prove costly at a critical stage of the campaign, as Sundowns’ lead at the top of the table is now under serious threat.
While the Chloorkop-based side remains in first place with 65 points from 28 matches, Orlando Pirates are breathing down their necks on 62 points from 27 games—holding both a game in hand and a superior goal difference.
Cardoso did not hide his dissatisfaction, suggesting that refereeing decisions played a significant role in the outcome. He also implied that similar officiating issues were evident in the recent Soweto Derby, raising concerns about the consistency of refereeing during high-stakes fixtures.
Cardoso’s Post-Match Comments
“It’s quite difficult to comment because many things could be said, but I need to take a better look at the TV footage,” said Cardoso.
“What is clear is that if we think about what happened in the Pirates match against Chiefs, and then today again—players leaving with serious shoulder injuries—it becomes concerning. It was a physical battle that the referee had the responsibility to control.
“I don’t want to say too much, but from the beginning it felt like a fight. They were targeting players, kicking repeatedly.”
He continued, urging officials to be better prepared for physical encounters:
“In matches like these, referees need to be fully prepared and understand what is at stake. Players are ending up in hospital with shoulder and arm injuries. Who is going to control this? Matches must be managed properly,” he added.
The Title Race Outlook
With just two matches remaining in their season, Sundowns find themselves in a must-win situation. To retain their title, they must secure maximum points from their remaining fixtures and hope that Pirates slip up in at least one of their final three games.
