The Secret Behind Morris’ Shock Chiefs Return

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has explained why he decided to introduce long-time absentee striker Tashreeq Morris during their 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United on Sunday.

Morris emerged as one of the heroes for Chiefs after scoring his first goal of the season, helping Amakhosi secure a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Mfundo Vilakazi also found the back of the net from the penalty spot as Chiefs claimed a late victory at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It was Morris’ first appearance of the season, and he marked his return in style.

Ben Youssef explained that the decision to introduce the 31-year-old in such a crucial match was carefully considered, with the coaching staff believing the timing was right.

“I always think about the team and not the player,” said Ben Youssef.

“Morris is one of our players, and he has been working very hard in training. He was waiting for the right moment, and we believed this was the right time to introduce him. We also discussed with him the importance of this game.”

Ben Youssef also provided an update on other players who did not feature in the match.

“As I said, there are people working behind us. For Lebohang Maboe, it was fatigue from the last game, so we decided not to start him and instead give him some rest. Siphesihle Ndlovu has four yellow cards, while Wandile Duba and Mduduzi Shabalala are both injured.

“We try to maintain consistency in the team, but sometimes there is a risk of injuries. Like I’ve said many times, we focus on the team and not the individual player. We showed that whenever we call upon a player, he is ready to fight for the badge, the team, and the fans.”

Amakhosi will now travel to Durban to face AmaZulu in their penultimate fixture of the season at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
