Munster Survive Ultimate Lions Assault As South Africans Secure Historic First Playoff Entry

Munster secured a top-eight finish and booked their place in the United Rugby Championship play-offs with a hard-fought 24-17 victory over the Lions on Saturday night.
On a cold evening at Thomond Park, with temperatures hovering around 11 degrees and a moderate breeze sweeping through the stadium, Munster produced a display of immense defensive resilience under sustained pressure from the Lions — despite being reduced to 13 men at one stage.
The Lions came out firing, playing with tremendous intensity from the outset. Despite dominating territory and applying relentless pressure in the opening exchanges, they were unable to convert their early momentum into points.
Munster, however, made the most of their first visit to the Lions’ 22. Following a powerful drive by Evan O’Connell, the hosts crossed the whitewash, with JJ Hanrahan — replacing the injured Jack Crowley — adding a straightforward conversion to hand Munster an early lead.
As Munster looked to extend their advantage, they opted for an ambitious floated pass out wide — a decision that proved costly. Quan Horn read it perfectly, intercepting the pass before sprinting half the length of the field to score beneath the posts.
Chris Smith added the conversion with ease to level the scores at 7-7.
Hanrahan restored Munster’s lead in the 24th minute, calmly slotting a penalty after the Lions were penalised at the breakdown.
Munster’s discipline then became a major concern. Andrew Smith was shown a yellow card for cynical interference at the pass, before Sean O’Brien was penalised for a deliberate knock-on, reducing Munster to 13 men.
The Lions capitalised on their numerical advantage, working the ball wide to create space for Kelly Mpeku to score a well-worked try. Smith converted to give the visitors a 14-10 lead.
Munster regained a player but were still down to 14 men. Despite that, they continued to attack with impressive determination and resilience, eventually striking through Craig Casey to reclaim the lead heading into the break.
HALF-TIME: MUNSTER 17-14 LIONS
Munster came out strongly in the second half, defending aggressively and shutting down the Lions’ attacking threats before building pressure through multiple phases.
Their efforts were rewarded when Tom Ahern took a short pass and powered over the line for another crucial try.
Hanrahan’s successful conversion extended Munster’s lead to 24-14.
The Lions reduced the deficit with a penalty from Smith, who slotted the kick to make it 24-17 with 20 minutes remaining.
Despite relentless pressure from the visitors in the closing stages, Munster stood firm defensively and refused to concede the decisive try.
The victory secured Munster’s place in the play-offs at the expense of Ulster, while the Lions, despite the defeat, also advanced to the knockout stages for the first time in their United Rugby Championship history.
Earlier in the day, the Vodacom Bulls produced a dominant attacking display to secure a bonus-point victory, scoring seven tries in a convincing 45-19 win over Benetton.
The Bulls raced into an early 14-0 lead through tries from Sergeal Petersen and Willie le Roux, both converted by Handré Pollard, before Benetton responded through Louis Lynagh’s first try after sustained maul pressure.
The hosts regained control with Johan Grobbelaar finishing off a driving maul, while Cobus Wiese added another try to extend the advantage before half-time.
One of the standout moments of the opening half came from Rhyno Smith, who produced a brilliant solo try following a clever Pollard chip kick. Smith also converted his own try, helping the Bulls to a commanding 26-12 half-time lead.
Benetton started the second half strongly, with Lynagh crossing for his second try after sharp handling and an effective kick chase, reducing the deficit to 26-19.
However, the Bulls’ replacements made a decisive impact. Stedman Gans created space for Petersen to grab his second try, before further scores from Mpilo Gumede and Ruan Nortje sealed the emphatic victory.
Pollard’s accurate kicking ensured the Bulls remained in complete control as they closed out a dominant performance.
