“One Game At A Time”: Hotto Sets Sights On MTN8 Final After Stunning First-Leg Winner

Man of the Match Deon Hotto insists Orlando Pirates know what is required to reach another MTN8 final after his brilliant first-half strike secured a 1-0 first-leg semifinal victory over Sekhukhune United at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The Namibian international combined superbly with versatile Zambian midfielder Ghampani Lungu before rifling the ball into the roof of the net, leaving former Pirates goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi with no chance of making the save.

The victory gives the defending champions a crucial lead ahead of the return fixture at Orlando Stadium next weekend. However, with a Betway Premiership clash against Babina Noko sandwiched in between on Tuesday, Hotto acknowledges the tactical challenge ahead.

“Facing the same team in three matches, it’s something crazy,” said Hotto.

“But we came here today and we did the job. The next one is at the Arena, and we know what we need to do. We just take it one game at a time.”

Hotto holds a special relationship with the Wafa Wafa competition, having won the trophy five times with the Buccaneers since joining the Soweto giants ahead of their 2020/21 triumph.

Reflecting on the tough conditions in Polokwane, the veteran praised his side’s tactical flexibility in navigating a compact Old Peter Mokaba Stadium pitch.

“It was a difficult game,” said Hotto.

“They brought us onto a small pitch; they wanted to squeeze us. But at the end of the day, we have a very good technical team and a very good team. We exploited the space that we wanted and I got my first goal in the MTN8. I’m grateful.

“I just want to thank the man above and the support I’m getting from my teammates and the technical staff.”

Pirates host Sekhukhune at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening in the league before locking horns again in Sunday’s decisive second leg.
